State Sets New Record For Daily Case Average, 27,346 New COVID-19 Cases

Michigan broke another COVID-19 record during this current surge of cases, obtaining the highest daily average of 12,680 new cases over the last seven days. 

Wednesday, Michigan reported 27,346 new cases of COVID-19 and 277 deaths for Tuesday and Wednesday – making up a daily average of 13,673 cases since the state health department last released its coronavirus numbers. 

Case rates are the highest for residents 20 to 29 years old, while cases amongst pediatric groups have jumped by 24% since the previous rate. Michigan’s positivity rate hopped from 21% last week to 30% currently. 

A week ago, the highest seven-day average was recorded at 8,402 cases per day. 

As of Dec. 30, The New York Times reported that the country is starting to average more than 300,000 daily new cases for the first-ever time in the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Michigan was ranked as the fourth highest state for COVID-19 deaths, with the daily average for deaths standing at 99.7 on The New York Times‘ coronavirus tracker – equating to one death per 100,000 residents. 

There are currently 342 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in Michigan, which is said to be four times more transmissible than the dominant Delta variant. 

Now, the state has accumulated a total of 1,595,919 positive cases of COVID-19 and 27,563 deaths since the pandemic started in March 2020. Additionally, 4,190 adults were hospitalized today with confirmed COVID-19 infections, as well as 107 children. 

Approximately 84% of all inpatient hospital beds across Michigan are occupied. Overall, adult hospitalizations are up by more than 7% since Monday. 

Michigan health officials continue to call for eligible residents to acquire the COVID-19 vaccine, as more than 172,000 youths aged 5 to 11 years-old have received their initial dose of the vaccine and approximately 63.4% of overall residents have received their first shot.
